• Starr County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 60,968. Its county seat is Rio Grande City. The county was created in 1848 and is named for James Harper Starr, who served as Secretary of the Treasury of the Republic of Texas.

Geography

• Starr County is located in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas and is one of the southernmost counties of the United States. It is bordered by Hidalgo County to the east, Zapata County to the west, and Mexico to the south.

Demographics

• According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,229 square miles, of which 1,223 square miles is land and 6.0 square miles is water. The population density was 49.8 inhabitants per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 95.7% white, 0.2% black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.9% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 95.7% of the population.
