Statisticians are responsible for designing surveys and experiments; collecting, processing, and analyzing data; and interpreting results. They use statistical software to analyze and interpret data, and they may also develop new statistical theories or models.

Most statisticians have a degree in statistics or mathematics, although some have degrees in other fields and have gained statistical expertise through coursework or work experience. Many statisticians also have a master's degree or Ph.D. in statistics or a related field.
