Steel guitar

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Steel guitar is a type of guitar that is played by sliding a steel bar or other hard object against the strings, rather than by pressing strings against the fretboard. This method of playing is also known as slide guitar. The term "steel guitar" can refer to instruments with one or more necks, and these necks may be fretted or fretless.

History[edit | edit source]

The steel guitar originated in Hawaii in the late 19th century. The technique of playing the guitar with a bar was developed by Joseph Kekuku, a Hawaiian musician. This style of playing was called kika kila, and it became a major part of Hawaiian music.

In the early 20th century, the steel guitar was introduced to the mainland United States, where it became popular in country music and blues. The instrument was further developed in the 1930s and 1940s, with the addition of multiple necks and pedals, leading to the creation of the pedal steel guitar.

Types of Steel Guitars[edit | edit source]

There are several types of steel guitars, including the lap steel guitar, the console steel guitar, and the pedal steel guitar. The lap steel guitar is played on the musician's lap, while the console steel guitar is played on a stand. The pedal steel guitar has pedals and knee levers that change the pitch of the strings.

Playing Techniques[edit | edit source]

Playing the steel guitar involves sliding a steel bar or other hard object along the strings. This creates a smooth, sliding sound that is characteristic of the instrument. The player can also create different effects by plucking the strings with fingerpicks, or by using techniques such as palm muting and string bending.

Influence and Use in Music[edit | edit source]

The steel guitar has had a significant influence on many genres of music. It is a key component of Hawaiian music, country music, and blues. It has also been used in rock music, jazz, and other genres. Notable musicians who have played the steel guitar include Jerry Byrd, Buddy Emmons, and David Gilmour.
