Stegastein is a popular tourist attraction located in Aurland, Norway. It is a viewing platform that offers panoramic views of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the larger Sognefjord. The platform is part of the Norwegian Scenic Routes, a collection of high-quality tourist routes across the country.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Stegastein is situated 650 meters above sea level and extends 30 meters from the mountainside. The platform is made of laminated pine and steel, and it was designed by the Norwegian architecture firm Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen. The structure was completed in 2006 and has since become a significant attraction for tourists visiting the Aurlandsfjord.
Location and Access[edit | edit source]
Stegastein is located approximately 6 kilometers from the center of Aurland. It can be reached by car via the Norwegian County Road 243. During the summer months, a shuttle bus service operates from Flåm and Aurland to the viewing platform.
Attractions[edit | edit source]
The main attraction of Stegastein is the breathtaking view of the Aurlandsfjord. The platform's design allows visitors to feel as though they are floating above the fjord, providing a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape. In addition to the view, the platform itself is a notable example of contemporary Norwegian architecture.
