Sterea Ellada

Sterea Ellada is one of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece. It is located in the central part of the country and is also known as Central Greece. The region is divided into five regional units: Evia, Boeotia, Phthiotis, Phocis, and Eurytania. The capital of Sterea Ellada is Lamia.

Sterea Ellada is characterized by its diverse geography. It is home to several mountain ranges, including the Parnassus and Oeta mountains. The region also features the largest island of Greece, Evia, which is separated from the mainland by the narrow Euripus Strait. Sterea Ellada is also known for its numerous rivers, the most notable of which is the Spercheios.

The history of Sterea Ellada dates back to ancient times. The region was the setting for many events in Greek mythology, including the myth of the hero Heracles. In the classical period, it was the location of the famous Oracle of Delphi. During the Byzantine Empire, Sterea Ellada was part of the Theme of Hellas. In modern times, the region played a significant role in the Greek War of Independence.

The economy of Sterea Ellada is diverse, with agriculture, industry, and tourism playing significant roles. The region is known for its production of olives and olive oil, particularly in the area of Amfissa.
