Steven Raichlen is an American culinary writer, TV host, and most notably, a barbecue chef. He is best known for his work in the field of barbecue and smoking cooking techniques. Raichlen has written several books on the subject, including the award-winning "The Barbecue! Bible" series.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Steven Raichlen was born in Nagasaki, Japan, and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and received a Watson Foundation Fellowship to study medieval cooking in Europe. Later, he trained at both the Cordon Bleu and La Varenne cooking schools in France.

Career[edit | edit source]

Raichlen's career began as a journalist and writer. His first book, "Miami Spice: The New Florida Cuisine," was published in 1993. However, it was his deep dive into the world of barbecue that brought him international recognition. His book "The Barbecue! Bible" has been translated into 17 languages and has sold over 5 million copies worldwide.

In addition to his writing, Raichlen has hosted several television shows, including "Barbecue University," "Primal Grill," and "Project Smoke" on PBS. He also hosts a French language cooking show called "Le Maitre du Grill." Raichlen's work on television has earned him multiple awards, including five James Beard Awards.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Steven Raichlen is married to Barbara Seldin Raichlen, and they have a daughter named Betsy. They currently reside in Miami, Florida, and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.
