Steven Timothy Judy (May 24, 1956 – March 9, 1981) was an American serial killer who was convicted of the murders of Terry Lee Chasteen and her three children in Indiana in 1979. His case is notable for the brutality of the crimes and the subsequent legal proceedings that led to his execution.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Steven Timothy Judy was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. His early life was marked by instability and violence. Judy's mother was reportedly abusive, and he spent much of his childhood in and out of foster care and juvenile detention facilities. By his teenage years, Judy had already begun to exhibit violent behavior, including sexual assault.

Crimes[edit | edit source]

In April 1979, Judy encountered Terry Lee Chasteen, a 23-year-old woman, whose car had broken down on the side of the road. Judy offered to help her, but instead, he abducted her and her three children. He drove them to a remote area where he raped and murdered Chasteen. He then drowned her three children in a nearby creek.

Arrest and Trial[edit | edit source]

Judy was quickly apprehended by law enforcement due to evidence left at the crime scene and his prior criminal record. During his trial, Judy's defense team attempted to argue that he was insane at the time of the murders. However, the jury found him guilty of all charges, and he was sentenced to death.

Execution[edit | edit source]

Steven Timothy Judy was executed in the Indiana State Prison on March 9, 1981, by electrocution. His execution was one of the first in Indiana after the reinstatement of the death penalty in the United States in 1976.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The case of Steven Timothy Judy remains a significant example of the criminal justice system's handling of violent offenders and the use of the death penalty. It also highlights issues related to the treatment of juveniles in the criminal justice system and the long-term impacts of childhood abuse and neglect.
