Stolen Generations
Stolen Generations
The term Stolen Generations refers to the Indigenous Australian children who were forcibly removed from their families by Australian federal and state government agencies and church missions, under acts of their respective parliaments. The removals occurred between approximately 1905 and 1967, although in some places children were still being taken in the 1970s.
Historical Context[edit | edit source]
The policy of removing Aboriginal children from their families was part of a broader strategy of assimilation aimed at integrating Indigenous people into white Australian society. The belief was that by removing children from the influence of their families and culture, they could be educated and trained to live as white Australians. This policy was influenced by the White Australia policy and the belief in the superiority of European culture.
Impact on Indigenous Communities[edit | edit source]
The impact of the Stolen Generations on Indigenous communities has been profound and long-lasting. Many of the children who were taken away suffered from loss of cultural identity, language, and connection to their land. They often faced abuse and neglect in the institutions or foster homes where they were placed. The trauma experienced by the Stolen Generations has had intergenerational effects, contributing to ongoing social and health issues within Indigenous communities.
Apology and Reconciliation[edit | edit source]
On 13 February 2008, then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd delivered a formal apology to the Stolen Generations on behalf of the Australian government. This apology was a significant step towards reconciliation and acknowledged the pain and suffering caused by the policies of forced removal.
Related Legislation and Reports[edit | edit source]
Several key pieces of legislation and reports have addressed the issue of the Stolen Generations, including:
- The Aborigines Protection Act 1909
- The Bringing Them Home report (1997), which provided a comprehensive investigation into the Stolen Generations and made numerous recommendations for reparations and support.
