Stratford
Stratford is a district in the East End of London, England, located in the London Borough of Newham. It is one of the major centres identified in the London Plan and has experienced significant regeneration in recent years, particularly due to its status as the primary host of the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
History[edit | edit source]
Stratford's early history is marked by its status as an agricultural community, with the name "Stratford" itself deriving from the Old English term for "street ford". The area's development began in earnest with the arrival of the railway in the 19th century, transforming it into an important hub of the British railway system.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Stratford is located in the lower Lea Valley, with the River Lea and its associated network of waterways forming a significant part of the area's geography. The district is bordered by Leyton to the north, Forest Gate to the east, West Ham to the south, and Bow to the west.

The economy of Stratford has undergone significant changes in recent years, largely driven by the area's regeneration following the 2012 Olympics. The Westfield Stratford City, one of the largest urban shopping centres in Europe, is a major employer and economic driver in the area.
Transport[edit | edit source]
Stratford is a significant transport hub, with Stratford station providing connections to the London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, and National Rail services. The area is also served by numerous bus routes.
