It is situated on the River Avon, 91 miles (146 km) northwest of London, 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Birmingham, and 8 miles (13 km) southwest of Warwick. The town is a popular tourist destination owing to its status as the birthplace of William Shakespeare, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language.
