The Sturgis Pretzel House is a historic site located in Lititz, Pennsylvania. It is known as the first commercial pretzel bakery in the United States. The house was established by Julius Sturgis in 1861, who learned the art of pretzel making from an itinerant baker.

The Sturgis family has a long history in the pretzel baking industry. Julius Sturgis, the founder of the Sturgis Pretzel House, was originally a bread baker. However, after housing a homeless man in exchange for the secret recipe of pretzel making, Sturgis established his own pretzel bakery.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

The Sturgis Pretzel House is a two-and-a-half-story, brick building in the Federal style. It was built in 1784 and has a gable roof. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Tours and Activities[edit | edit source]

Visitors to the Sturgis Pretzel House can take a guided tour of the original pretzel bakery, learn about the history of pretzel making, and even try their hand at twisting a traditional pretzel. The house also has a gift shop where visitors can purchase Sturgis Pretzel products.
