From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Sue Rodriguez (August 2, 1950 – February 12, 1994) was a Canadian woman diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. She is best known for her involvement in a landmark legal case to challenge the Canadian law on assisted suicide.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Rodriguez was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and later moved to Victoria, British Columbia. She was diagnosed with ALS in early 1991.

Legal Battle[edit | edit source]

In 1992, Rodriguez brought her case to the Supreme Court of Canada, arguing that the Criminal Code prohibition of assisted suicide violated her rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The court ruled against her in a 5-4 decision in September 1993.

Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Rodriguez died by assisted suicide in February 1994. Her death sparked a national debate on the issue of assisted suicide, leading to changes in Canadian law in 2016.
