Suicidal

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Suicidal ideation refers to thoughts about, or an unusual preoccupation with, suicide. The range of suicidal ideation varies greatly from fleeting thoughts, to extensive thoughts, to detailed planning. Most people who undergo suicidal ideation do not go on to make suicide attempts, but it is considered a risk factor. During a psychiatric assessment, suicidal ideation is a part of the assessment of mood.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Suicidal ideation is a common symptom of many mental disorders including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and alcoholism. It is also associated with anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and eating disorders.
