Prab R Tumpati, MD, founder of WikiMD and W8MD medical weight loss centers of America, is board certified sleep medicine, obesity, and aesthetic medicine.

Childhood[edit | edit source]

Born in a village in Andhra Pradesh, in the district of West Godavari, called M.Nagulapalli, in a family of farmers, Dr. Tumpati completed primary education in his native place. He completed his secondary education in the neighboring Krishna district, staying at Maranatha Children Home in Kurumaddali. Dr. Tumpati was a bright student, thanks to the wonderful mentors and teachers, as he was the winner of two gold medals in the 10th grade at Zilla Parishad High School in Pamarru, Krishna district.

Post primary education[edit | edit source]

Dr. Tumpati moved from Kurumaddali, to the bigger city of Vijayawada to complete his 11th and 12th grades, two crucial years of education that sets the stage for a further studies. Having secured a competitive rank in an entrance examination for medication education called EAMCET, Dr. Tumpati was able to attend one of the top medical colleges in the state, Osmania medical college, Hyderabad, where he was a medical student, Osmania medical college class of 1990.

Medical education[edit | edit source]

In the year 1995, Dr. Tumpati completed a 4.5 year medical education at Osmania medical college obtaining an MBBS degree followed by one year of internship called house surgeon.

Norway[edit | edit source]

In order to obtain further medication, Dr. Tumpati moved to Norway where he took various language courses to learn the Norwegian language and medical courses before securing a job as a physician in Norway, in a city called Bodo.

United States[edit | edit source]

In the year 2001, Dr. Tumpati came to the United States where he met his wife who was working as a software engineer and after getting married the following year, he decided to pursue further medication education in the United States. After successfully completing the required USMLE steps, Dr. Tumpati got a residency in [[internal medicine at Abington Memorial Hospital, in the greater Philadelphia area.

Residency[edit | edit source]

A year medical residency in internal medicine was completed at Abington Memorial Hospital, Abington, PA in the year 2007.

Sleep medicine[edit | edit source]

Dr. Tumpati was fortunate to work in the field of sleep medicine after his residency at University Services which allowed him to seek board certification in the field of sleep medicine via practice pathway after successfully meeting all the requirements. Dr. Tumpati has been board certified in the field of sleep medicine since 2010 and is board eligible in obesity medicine, aesthetic medicine.

Obesity medicine training[edit | edit source]

As many of the patients in the sleep clinics where Dr. Tumpati was working deal with obesity, given the association of obesity with sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, Dr. Tumpati enrolled in a CME based fellowship, or advance curriculum with the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP), now called the Obesity Medicine Association. After two years of CME based training in obesity medicine and having passed a written board examination in the field, Dr TUmpati able to integrate my obesity medicine practice in the sleep medicine clinics.

As a practicing sleep medicine physician, Dr. Tumpati realized the need for a comprehensive care plan that not only addresses the sleep disorders such as sleep apnea but also deal with any risk factors such as obesity. In order to achieve this, Dr.Tumpati started W8MD medical weight loss centers of America that deals with the medical management of obesity and over 50 of its associated disorders.

Current practice interests[edit | edit source]

As a practicing sleep medicine physician,Dr Tumpati sees overweight and obese patients many of whom struggle with their weight issues despite their best efforts to try to lose weight. Having a keen interest in learning new things, Dr. Tumpati decided to seek additional education and training in the field of obesity medicine.

Dr Tumpati works in the three states with offices in Greater Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York practicing the combination of obesity medicine, sleep medicine and internal medicine.

Practice focus[edit | edit source]

Our practice is focused on prevention of over 50 different medical problems directly or indirectly related obesity with a focus on reversing the underlying causes of weight gain such as Insulin Resistance that drives the eating habits and weight gain. Rather than the common approach of blaming the victim for obesity, we understand the true causes of food cravings, with the resulting overeating and we work with our patients to reverse these in a way that leads to meaningful and sustained weight loss.

Dr Tumpati remains active in many professional societies including a member of American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Obesity Medicine Association, American Physicians of Indian Origin and serves as the secretary and executive committee member of the American Association of Physicians Of Indian Origin – Sleep (AAPIOS).
