Suicide of Tyler Clementi

Tyler Clementi (December 19, 1991 – September 22, 2010) was an 18-year-old student at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, who took his own life after being subjected to an invasion of privacy by his roommate. His death brought national attention to the issues of cyberbullying, homophobia, and the struggles facing LGBT youth.

Background

Tyler Clementi was a talented violinist who had just begun his freshman year at Rutgers University. He was assigned to share a room with Dharun Ravi. Unbeknownst to Clementi, Ravi set up a webcam in their dorm room and broadcasted a private encounter between Clementi and another man on the internet.

Incident

On September 19, 2010, Ravi, without Clementi's knowledge or consent, activated his webcam remotely to spy on Clementi's intimate encounter. Ravi tweeted about the incident and invited his followers to watch a second encounter. Clementi discovered the violation of his privacy by reading Ravi's Twitter feed.

Aftermath

Distraught over the invasion of his privacy, Clementi left a note and jumped off the George Washington Bridge on September 22, 2010. His body was found in the Hudson River several days later.

Following Clementi's death, Ravi was charged with multiple counts, including invasion of privacy, bias intimidation, and tampering with evidence. In 2012, Ravi was convicted on several charges and sentenced to 30 days in jail, probation, and community service.

Impact

Tyler Clementi's suicide highlighted the serious consequences of cyberbullying and the need for greater protections for LGBT individuals. It led to the creation of the Tyler Clementi Foundation, an organization dedicated to preventing bullying through inclusion, assertion of dignity, and acceptance.

The case also prompted legislative action. In New Jersey, the "Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act" was passed, considered one of the toughest anti-bullying laws in the United States.
