Sully County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,373. Its county seat is Onida. The county was created in 1873 and organized in 1883. It is named after General Alfred Sully who built Fort Sully.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Sully County is located in the central part of South Dakota. It has a total area of 1,070 square miles, of which 1,007 square miles is land and 63 square miles is water. The county's highest point is on the eastern boundary near the northeast corner, at 2,014' (614m) ASL.

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 1,373 people, 602 households, and 413 families in the county. The population density was 1.4 inhabitants per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 96.4% white, 2.0% American Indian, 0.1% black or African American, 0.1% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races.
