Suntory Holdings Limited (サントリーホールディングス株式会社, Santorī Hōrudingusu Kabushiki-Gaisha) is a Japanese multinational brewing and distilling company group. Founded in 1899, it is one of the oldest companies in the distribution of alcoholic beverages in Japan, and also makes soft drinks and other products. Its headquarters are located in Osaka, Japan.

History[edit | edit source]

Suntory was founded by Shinjiro Torii in 1899 as Torii Shoten, a store selling imported wines. In 1923, Torii built Japan's first malt whisky distillery, Yamazaki Distillery, in the outskirts of Kyoto. The first whisky produced, Suntory Shirofuda (White Label), was introduced in 1929. The company changed its name to Suntory in 1963.

Suntory is known for its diverse range of products, including:

  • Whisky: Suntory produces several well-known brands of whisky, including Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Hibiki.
  • Beer: Suntory's beer brands include The Premium Malt's and Suntory All-Free.
  • Soft drinks: The company produces a variety of soft drinks, including Suntory Tennensui (natural mineral water) and BOSS Coffee.
  • Health foods and supplements: Suntory also offers health foods and supplements, such as Sesamin EX.

Global Expansion[edit | edit source]

Suntory has expanded its operations globally through acquisitions and partnerships. In 2014, Suntory acquired the American spirits company Beam Inc., creating Beam Suntory, one of the world's largest producers of distilled beverages. Suntory also has a significant presence in the European and Asian markets.

Corporate Social Responsibility[edit | edit source]

Suntory is committed to various corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, including environmental sustainability, cultural promotion, and community engagement. The company has established the Suntory Foundation for Arts and the Suntory Foundation for Life Sciences to support these efforts.
