Susanville is a city located in Lassen County, California, United States. It is the county seat of Lassen County and is located on the Susan River in the southern part of the county. The population was 17,974 at the 2010 census, up from 13,541 at the 2000 census.

Susanville was named after Susan Roop, daughter of Isaac Roop, an early settler of the Honey Lake Valley. The city was incorporated on December 24, 1900.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Susanville is located at the head of Honey Lake Valley, at an elevation of 4,186 feet (1,276 m). It is surrounded by mountains and is considered a gateway to the great outdoors, with a variety of recreational activities like fishing, hiking, biking, and skiing.

Climate[edit | edit source]

Susanville has a semi-arid climate with cold, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The average annual precipitation is 13.11 inches.

As of the census of 2010, there were 17,974 people, 6,733 households, and 4,500 families residing in the city.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Susanville is based on a mix of retail, services, government employment, and corrections (the city hosts three state prisons).

Susanville is served by Banner Lassen Medical Center, a 25-bed critical access hospital. It also has several medical clinics and a public health department.

Education[edit | edit source]

Education in Susanville is provided by the Lassen County Office of Education, Lassen Community College, and several public and private schools.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Susanville is served by U.S. Route 395 and State Route 36. The city also has a municipal airport, Susanville Municipal Airport.
