Sussex County is a rural county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,087. Its county seat is Sussex. It was formed in 1754 from Surry County. The county is named after the county of Sussex, England.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Sussex County is located in the southeastern part of Virginia. The county's total area is 492 square miles, of which 490 square miles is land and 2 square miles is water. The county is bordered by Surry County to the north, Southampton County to the east, Greensville County to the south, and Prince George County to the west.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2010 census, there were 12,087 people, 4,400 households, and 3,100 families residing in the county. The racial makeup of the county was 60.4% Black or African American, 37.2% White, 0.5% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.8% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.9% of the population.
