Swinging

Swinging is a form of open relationship that is practiced by both singles and partners in a committed relationship. It is also known as wife swapping, husband swapping, or partner swapping. Swinging is a form of non-monogamy and is an open relationship. It may come in the form of a polyamorous relationship or polyfidelity.

History

The phenomenon of swinging, or at least its wider discussion and practice, is regarded by some as arising from the freer attitudes to sexual activity after the sexual revolution of the 1960s, the invention and availability of the contraceptive pill, and the emergence of treatments for many of the sexually transmitted diseases that were known at that time.

Swinging Activities

Swinging activities can include having sex with a partner while being watched; watching others have sex (perhaps with the above mentioned partner); kissing, stroking, or having oral sex with a third or fourth person (called soft swinging); or having penetrative sex with someone other than one's partner (Full Swap), which is the commonly understood definition of swinging.

Swinging Subculture

The swinging lifestyle is in some ways similar to the gay liberation, bisexual, and LGBT communities, and the sexual revolution of the 1970s in terms of challenging current definitions of relationships and sexuality.
