Synageva BioPharma is a biopharmaceutical company that specializes in the development and commercialization of therapeutic products for rare diseases. The company was founded in 1996 and is headquartered in Lexington, Massachusetts.

Synageva BioPharma was initially established as a private company in 1996. In 2011, it merged with Trimeris, a public company, and subsequently became a publicly traded company on the NASDAQ stock exchange.

Products[edit | edit source]

The company's lead product is sebelipase alfa, a recombinant form of the human Lysosomal Acid Lipase (LAL) enzyme. This product is used for the treatment of Lysosomal Acid Lipase Deficiency (LAL-D), a rare and life-threatening disease.

Research and Development[edit | edit source]

Synageva BioPharma is committed to the research and development of new therapies for rare diseases. The company's research efforts are focused on the development of enzyme replacement therapies (ERTs) for diseases that are caused by the deficiency of specific lysosomal enzymes.

Acquisition[edit | edit source]

In 2015, Synageva BioPharma was acquired by Alexion Pharmaceuticals, a global biopharmaceutical company. The acquisition was valued at approximately $8.4 billion.
