Systems neuroscience is a sub-discipline of neuroscience that studies the function of neural circuits and systems. This idea was further developed by Donald Hebb, who proposed that neurons that fire together wire together, forming the basis for learning and memory.

Systems neuroscience employs a variety of techniques to investigate the function of neural circuits and systems. These include electrophysiology, optogenetics, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
