TMA-2
TMA-2 is a fictional spacecraft in Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey series. It is first introduced in the second novel of the series, 2010: Odyssey Two.
Overview[edit | edit source]
TMA-2, also known as the Jupiter Monolith, is a large, black, rectangular monolith discovered in orbit around the planet Jupiter. It is identical in appearance to the TMA-1, a similar monolith found on the Moon in the first novel of the series, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Discovery[edit | edit source]
The TMA-2 is discovered by the crew of the spaceship Leonov, a joint Soviet-American mission sent to investigate the disappearance of the Discovery One. Upon arrival, they find the TMA-2 in a stable orbit around Jupiter, emitting a strong magnetic field.
Function[edit | edit source]
The TMA-2 serves as a star gate, a portal to other parts of the universe. When activated, it transports the Leonov and its crew to a distant star system. This function is revealed in 2061: Odyssey Three, the third novel of the series.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
The TMA-2 plays a significant role in the Space Odyssey series, serving as a catalyst for humanity's exploration of the universe. Its discovery and subsequent activation mark a turning point in human history, as mankind begins to venture beyond the confines of the solar system.
