== Tabletop Role-Playing Game ==

A tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) is a form of role-playing game (RPG) in which participants describe their characters' actions through speech. Players determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the success of their actions is often determined by rules and guidelines within the game. Within the rules, players have the freedom to improvise; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the game.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of tabletop role-playing games can be traced back to the early 1970s with the creation of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. D&D was the first commercially available TTRPG and has since become the most well-known and influential game in the genre. The success of D&D led to the development of numerous other TTRPGs, each with its own unique settings, rules, and mechanics.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

In a typical TTRPG, one player assumes the role of the Game Master (GM), also known as the Dungeon Master (DM) in D&D. The GM is responsible for creating the game world, narrating the story, and controlling non-player characters (NPCs). The other players create and control their own player characters (PCs), who interact with the game world and each other.

Character Creation[edit | edit source]

Character creation is a fundamental aspect of TTRPGs. Players typically choose a character class, race, and other attributes that define their character's abilities and background. These choices are often recorded on a character sheet, which tracks the character's statistics, equipment, and other important information.

Game Mechanics[edit | edit source]

Game mechanics in TTRPGs vary widely but often include the use of dice to determine the outcomes of actions. Common dice used in TTRPGs include the d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, and d4. The results of dice rolls are compared to difficulty ratings or target numbers to determine success or failure.

Genres[edit | edit source]

TTRPGs span a wide range of genres, including fantasy, science fiction, horror, superhero, and historical. Each genre offers unique settings and themes, allowing players to explore different types of stories and adventures.

Community and Culture[edit | edit source]

The TTRPG community is diverse and vibrant, with players and creators from around the world. Conventions such as Gen Con and PAX provide opportunities for fans to gather, play games, and share their passion for TTRPGs. Online platforms like Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds have also made it easier for players to connect and play games remotely.
