Tanks are distinguished by heavy armor protection, powerful weapons, and caterpillar tracks that allow them to cross rough terrain at relatively high speeds. Although tanks are most commonly used by armies, they are also employed by the Marine Corps and other military branches for combined arms operations.

The design of a tank is a complex engineering challenge that balances between three primary characteristics: firepower, protection, and mobility.

Some argue that advancements in anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), drones, and other technologies may make traditional tanks obsolete. Others believe that tanks will continue to evolve, incorporating new technologies such as unmanned turrets, hybrid propulsion systems, and advanced active protection systems to maintain their relevance on the modern battlefield.
