Teaneck is a township in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. It is located in the northeastern part of the state and is considered a suburb of New York City. With a population of 39,776 as of the 2010 Census, Teaneck is the second-largest municipality in Bergen County.

History[edit | edit source]

Teaneck was first settled by the Lenape Native Americans and was later colonized by the Dutch in the 17th century. The area was originally known as "Overpeck" and was primarily agricultural. In the late 19th century, the township experienced rapid growth due to the construction of railroads and the establishment of industries. Teaneck was officially incorporated as a township on February 19, 1895.

. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 5.86 square miles (15.18 km2), of which 5.59 square miles (14.48 km2) is land and 0.27 square miles (0.70 km2) is water.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2010 Census, there were 39,776 people, 13,470 households, and 10,134 families residing in the township. The population density was 7,112.7 inhabitants per square mile (2,747.3/km2). There were 14,327 housing units at an average density of 2,564.6 per square mile (990.6/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 45.88% White, 28.69% African American, 0.23% Native American, 17.08% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 4.18% from other races, and 3.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.28% of the population.

Teaneck is served by the Teaneck Public Schools, which include several elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. The township is also home to Fairleigh Dickinson University, a private university with campuses in Teaneck and nearby Hackensack.
