Terminal cancer
Terminal cancer is a term often used to describe cancer that cannot be cured or adequately treated and that is reasonably expected to result in the death of the patient. This term is more commonly used for progressive diseases such as cancer or advanced heart disease than for diseases that can be effectively treated.
Definition[edit | edit source]
Terminal cancer refers to cancer that cannot be cured or controlled with treatment and is likely to cause death within a limited period of time. The time frame may be months or years, but the prognosis is poor. The term is not used to describe the temporary discomforts and challenges of cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Prognosis[edit | edit source]
The prognosis for terminal cancer varies widely. It depends on the type of cancer, the stage at diagnosis, the patient's overall health, and the effectiveness of any treatment given. Some patients may live for many years with terminal cancer, while others may die within months or even weeks of diagnosis.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for terminal cancer is focused on providing comfort and improving the quality of life. This may include palliative care, which is care given to improve the quality of life of patients who have a serious or life-threatening disease, such as cancer. Palliative care is not the same as hospice care, which is care given to improve the quality of life of patients who are at the end of life and are no longer receiving curative treatment.
