Terrell County is a county located in the southwestern portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,315. The county seat is Dawson. Terrell County is included in the Albany, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Terrell County is located in the Lower Coastal Plain region of southwest Georgia. The county is primarily rural with agriculture being the mainstay of the local economy. The county is also home to several wildlife preserves that offer recreational opportunities such as hunting, fishing, and bird watching.

History[edit | edit source]

Terrell County was created on February 16, 1856 from portions of Randolph and Lee counties. It was named after Dr. William Terrell (1778-1855) of Sparta, Georgia who served in the Georgia General Assembly and the United States House of Representatives.

Healthcare in Terrell County is primarily provided by two main facilities: the Southwest Georgia Health Care, Inc. and the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Southwest Georgia Health Care, Inc.[edit | edit source]

Southwest Georgia Health Care, Inc. is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that provides a wide range of health services to the residents of Terrell County. The services provided by this facility include primary care, dental care, behavioral health services, and pharmacy services. The facility is located in Dawson, the county seat of Terrell County.

Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital[edit | edit source]

Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital is a not-for-profit healthcare delivery system that serves the residents of Terrell County. The hospital is located in Albany, Georgia and is part of the Phoebe Putney Health System. The hospital offers a wide range of services including emergency care, surgical services, women's health, and cancer care.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 9,315 people, 3,519 households, and 2,431 families residing in the county. The racial makeup of the county was 61.4% black or African American, 36.8% white, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% American Indian, 0.5% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 1.5% of the population.

The Terrell County School District operates public schools in the county. The district operates one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school.
