Terrewode Women's Community Hospital (TWCH) is a specialized healthcare facility located in Uganda. It is dedicated to the treatment and care of women suffering from obstetric fistula, a severe medical condition that can occur during childbirth.

History[edit | edit source]

The hospital was established by The Association for Rehabilitation and Re-orientation of Women for Development (TERREWODE), a Ugandan non-governmental organization. TERREWODE has been actively involved in the fight against obstetric fistula since 1999. The hospital was built to provide a dedicated facility for the treatment of this condition, which is prevalent in Uganda.

Services[edit | edit source]

Terrewode Women's Community Hospital offers comprehensive fistula care services, including surgery, nursing care, physiotherapy, and counseling. The hospital also provides reintegration services to help women return to their communities after treatment.

Obstetric Fistula[edit | edit source]

Obstetric fistula is a hole between the vagina and rectum or bladder that is caused by prolonged obstructed labor, leaving a woman incontinent of urine or feces or both. In Uganda, it is estimated that more than 200,000 women live with this condition, and around 1,900 new cases occur each year.

Partnerships[edit | edit source]

The hospital works in partnership with various organizations to enhance its services. These include the Uganda Ministry of Health, the Fistula Foundation, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
