The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, formerly known as the Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Christie Hospital NHS Trust, is a healthcare organization based in Withington, Manchester. It manages the Christie Hospital, one of the largest cancer treatment centers in Europe. The trust became an NHS Foundation Trust in 2007 and is renowned for its cancer research and development, housing the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research.

History: The Christie Hospital was established through the generosity of Sir Joseph Whitworth, who left money in his will in 1887. Richard Copley Christie, one of the beneficiaries, used some of the funds to purchase land adjacent to Owens College. This land was intended to relocate the central Manchester hospitals from the crowded city center. In 1892, a Cancer Pavilion and Home for Incurables was founded on the site, partly funded by a legacy from Daniel Proctor.
