The Independent

The Independent is a British online newspaper. Established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper, it transitioned to a digital-only format in 2016. The newspaper was founded by Andreas Whittam Smith, Stephen Glover, and Matthew Symonds.

The Independent was launched on 7 October 1986. It was created by former journalists from The Daily Telegraph and The Times. The newspaper quickly gained a reputation for its distinctive editorial stance and high-quality journalism.
In 1990, the newspaper launched its Sunday edition, The Independent on Sunday. However, due to financial difficulties, the print edition of The Independent ceased publication on 26 March 2016, and it became a digital-only publication.

The Independent was initially owned by Newspaper Publishing plc. In 1994, it was sold to Tony O'Reilly's Independent News & Media. In 2010, it was acquired by Alexander Lebedev and his son Evgeny Lebedev.
