The Signpost is the community-written and edited newsletter of the Wikipedia community. It serves as a platform for news, opinion, and discussion about Wikipedia and the broader Wikimedia movement. The Signpost is published on a weekly basis and is available to all users of Wikipedia.

History[edit | edit source]

The Signpost was founded in January 2005 by Michael Snow, a Wikipedia editor who later became the chair of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. Initially, it was created to provide a centralized source of news and information for the Wikipedia community, which was rapidly growing at the time.

Over the years, The Signpost has evolved to cover a wide range of topics, including technical developments, community discussions, policy changes, and notable events within the Wikimedia projects. It has become an important resource for both new and experienced Wikipedians.

Content[edit | edit source]

The Signpost includes several regular sections, such as:

  • News and notes: Updates on recent developments within Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation.
  • In the media: Coverage of how Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects are portrayed in external media.
  • Technology report: Information on technical changes and updates affecting Wikipedia.
  • Discussion report: Summaries of ongoing discussions and debates within the Wikipedia community.
  • Opinion and analysis: Editorials and opinion pieces from community members.

Editorial Process[edit | edit source]

The Signpost is written and edited by volunteers from the Wikipedia community. Anyone can contribute to the newsletter by writing articles, suggesting topics, or providing feedback. The editorial team is responsible for coordinating the publication process and ensuring the quality and accuracy of the content.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The Signpost has played a significant role in fostering communication and collaboration within the Wikipedia community. It provides a platform for sharing information, discussing issues, and highlighting the achievements of Wikipedians. The newsletter has also been instrumental in promoting transparency and accountability within the Wikimedia movement.
