The Whiffenpoofs
The Whiffenpoofs are a collegiate a cappella singing group established at Yale University in 1909. They are recognized as one of the oldest and most prestigious a cappella groups in the United States. The group is composed of senior students from Yale, and they perform a wide range of musical genres, including traditional Yale songs, jazz standards, and contemporary pop music.
History[edit | edit source]
The Whiffenpoofs were founded by a group of Yale seniors who were members of the Yale Glee Club. The original lineup included five members: Denton "Goat" Fowler, S. W. "Pop" Sloane, John M. "Jack" Salter, Louis L. "Lafe" Bowen, and T. C. "Terry" Gilman. The name "Whiffenpoof" was inspired by a mythical creature mentioned in a popular musical of the time.
Traditions[edit | edit source]
One of the most notable traditions of The Whiffenpoofs is their weekly performance at Mory's Temple Bar, a historic Yale club. The group also embarks on an annual world tour, performing at various venues and events around the globe. Each year, new members are selected through a rigorous audition process, ensuring the continuation of the group's high musical standards.
Repertoire[edit | edit source]
The Whiffenpoofs' repertoire includes a mix of traditional Yale songs, such as "The Whiffenpoof Song," jazz standards, and contemporary pop arrangements. Their signature song, "The Whiffenpoof Song," is based on a poem by Rudyard Kipling and has been covered by numerous artists over the years.
Notable Alumni[edit | edit source]
Many former Whiffenpoofs have gone on to achieve significant success in various fields. Notable alumni include:
- Cole Porter, a renowned composer and songwriter.
- Jonathan Coulton, a singer-songwriter known for his humorous and satirical songs.
- John Kerry, former U.S. Secretary of State and 2004 Democratic presidential nominee.
