Thomson Reuters Corporation is a multinational media and information firm based in Toronto, Canada. It was created by the Thomson Corporation's purchase of Reuters Group in April 2008 in a deal valued at approximately $17.6 billion. Thomson Reuters is best known for its comprehensive coverage of financial markets, legal, regulatory, and tax and accounting sectors. It provides software and tools for legal, tax, accounting, and media markets.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Thomson Reuters date back to two separate entities: the Thomson Corporation of Canada and the Reuters Group in the United Kingdom. The Thomson Corporation was established in 1934, initially focusing on newspaper publishing. Over the decades, it shifted its focus towards electronic media and became a significant player in the information technology sector. On the other hand, Reuters Group was founded in 1851 by Paul Julius Reuter, focusing initially on providing telegraph-based news services. Over time, Reuters expanded its offerings to include financial market data, becoming a key resource for investors and financial professionals worldwide.

The merger in 2008 was seen as a strategic move to combine Thomson's strength in providing electronic information with Reuters' expertise in delivering news and financial data. The combined entity, Thomson Reuters, aimed to leverage these strengths to offer a broader array of services.
