Thoracic region

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Thoracic region refers to the area of the body that is located between the neck and the abdomen. It is also known as the chest region and is protected by the thoracic cage, which is made up of the sternum, ribs, and thoracic vertebrae. The thoracic region houses several vital organs, including the heart and lungs.

Anatomy of the Thoracic Region[edit | edit source]

The thoracic region is a complex area of the body that contains several important structures. The thoracic cage, which is made up of 12 pairs of ribs, the sternum, and the 12 thoracic vertebrae, provides protection for the organs within the thoracic cavity. The thoracic cavity itself is divided into three parts: the mediastinum, which contains the heart, thymus, and several large blood vessels; and the two pleural cavities, each of which contains a lung.

The thoracic region also contains several muscles that assist in breathing, including the diaphragm, the intercostal muscles, and the muscles of the abdominal wall. These muscles work together to expand and contract the thoracic cavity, allowing air to flow in and out of the lungs.

Functions of the Thoracic Region[edit | edit source]

The primary function of the thoracic region is to protect the vital organs within the thoracic cavity. The thoracic cage provides a rigid structure that shields the heart and lungs from injury. The muscles of the thoracic region also play a crucial role in respiration, helping to expand and contract the thoracic cavity to facilitate the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs.

In addition to its protective and respiratory functions, the thoracic region also plays a role in the circulatory system. The heart, which is located in the mediastinum, pumps blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the body's tissues and organs.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Due to the vital organs it houses, the thoracic region is often the focus of medical examination and treatment. Conditions such as pneumonia, pleurisy, and lung cancer can affect the lungs, while heart disease and heart attacks can affect the heart. The thoracic region can also be affected by musculoskeletal conditions such as costochondritis and rib fractures.
