Teratospermia is a medical condition characterized by the presence of sperm with abnormal morphology that affects the fertility in males.
Definition[edit | edit source]
Teratospermia is a condition in which a significant number of sperm have abnormal shape and size. This can affect a man's ability to conceive, as the shape of a sperm is crucial to its ability to fertilize an egg. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines teratospermia as having more than 96% of sperm with abnormal morphology.
Causes[edit | edit source]
The exact cause of teratospermia is often unknown, but it may be associated with several factors including:
- Genetic defects
- Infections
- Exposure to chemicals and toxins
- Varicocele
- Age
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Teratospermia is diagnosed through a semen analysis. This test evaluates the health and viability of a man's sperm, including the number, movement, and shape of the sperm. A diagnosis of teratospermia is made when more than 96% of sperm are found to have abnormal morphology.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for teratospermia depends on the underlying cause. If a specific cause can be identified, such as an infection or varicocele, treating that condition may improve sperm morphology. In some cases, assisted reproductive technologies, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), may be recommended.
