The history of peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and its association with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) spans over centuries, with significant advancements in understanding and treatment occurring in the late 20th century.   • 1905: Walter Alvarez, an American physician, proposes that ulcers are caused by stress, a theory that dominated the understanding of PUD for much of the 20th century.
