Timothy is a common masculine given name. It comes from the Greek name Τιμόθεος (Timόtheos) meaning "honouring God" or "honoured by God". Timothy (and its variations) is a common name in several countries.

The name Timothy is derived from the Greek name Τιμόθεος (Timόtheos), which is composed of two elements: 'Τιμό', derived from τιμάω (timao), meaning 'to honour', and 'θεος' (theos), meaning 'God'. Therefore, the name can be interpreted as "one who honours God" or "honoured by God".
