Tina Anselmi (25 March 1927 – 1 November 2016) was an Italian politician and a prominent member of the Christian Democracy party. She is best known for being the first woman to hold a ministerial position in Italy.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Tina Anselmi was born in Castelfranco Veneto, a town in the province of Treviso, Italy. She was the daughter of a pharmacist and grew up in a politically active family. During World War II, she joined the Italian resistance movement against the Nazis and the Italian Social Republic.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Anselmi's political career began after the war when she joined the Christian Democracy party. She was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies in 1968 and served multiple terms. Throughout her career, she was a strong advocate for social justice, women's rights, and labor rights.

Minister of Labor and Social Security[edit | edit source]

In 1976, Anselmi was appointed as the Minister of Labor and Social Security, making her the first woman to hold a ministerial position in Italy. During her tenure, she focused on improving labor conditions, promoting gender equality in the workplace, and enhancing social security benefits.

Minister of Health[edit | edit source]

Anselmi also served as the Minister of Health from 1978 to 1979. In this role, she worked on various health reforms and policies aimed at improving the Italian healthcare system.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After retiring from active politics, Anselmi continued to be involved in various social causes and organizations. She was a member of the National Association of Italian Partisans and worked on several initiatives to preserve the history and memory of the Italian resistance movement.

Tina Anselmi passed away on 1 November 2016 in her hometown of Castelfranco Veneto. She is remembered as a trailblazer for women in Italian politics and a dedicated public servant.
