Tobias is a male given name derived from the Greek Τοβίας, which is a translation of the Hebrew biblical name Toviyah (טוביה), meaning "God is good". It is a popular name in many English-speaking and European countries, and has been used by several characters in literature and popular culture.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The name Tobias is derived from the Hebrew name Toviyah (טוביה), which is composed of two elements: Tov (טוב), meaning "good", and Yah (יה), a shortened form of Yahweh, the name of the Hebrew God. Thus, the name Tobias means "God is good". The Greek form of the name, Τοβίας, is used in the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament) and the New Testament.

  • Tobias, an Israelite: Mentioned in the Book of Nehemiah as one of those who stood at the right hand of Ezra the scribe during the reading of the Law.
