Toluca

Toluca is the capital city of the State of Mexico, and the seat of the Municipality of Toluca. It is located in the central part of the country, to the west of Mexico City. Toluca is the center of a rapidly growing urban area, known as the Toluca Metropolitan Area. The city is the fifth largest in Mexico in population. The city is surrounded by the Toluca Valley which is an important region for industrial and economic activity in Mexico.

Toluca was originally an Otomi settlement, before it was conquered by the Aztec Empire in the 15th century. The city was then known as Tollocan. After the Spanish conquest, the city was renamed Toluca. It became a municipality in 1821, and was declared a capital of the State of Mexico in 1830.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Toluca is located in the southwestern part of the State of Mexico, in the central highlands of Mexico. The city is surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. The Nevado de Toluca or Xinantécatl is a large stratovolcano located to the southwest of the city.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Toluca is an important economic center in Mexico. It is home to many manufacturing industries, including automotive, aerospace, and food processing. The city is also a major retail center, with numerous shopping malls and supermarkets.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Toluca is known for its rich cultural heritage. The city has many historical buildings, museums, and art galleries. The Cosmovitral is a famous stained glass mural located in the city. Toluca is also known for its traditional food, especially the Toluca sausage or chorizo toluqueño.

Education[edit | edit source]

Toluca is home to several universities and higher education institutions. The Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México) is the largest university in the city.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Toluca is served by the Toluca International Airport, which is the busiest cargo airport in Mexico. The city also has a comprehensive public transportation system, including buses and taxis.
