Thomas Leo Clancy Jr. (April 12, 1947 – October 1, 2013) was an American novelist best known for his technically detailed espionage and military-science storylines set during and after the Cold War. His name is also a brand for similar works written by other authors.

Tom Clancy was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in the Northwood neighborhood. He attended Loyola University Maryland, where he graduated in 1969 with a degree in English literature. Clancy had a lifelong interest in military history and technology, which would later become a hallmark of his writing.

Clancy's career as a writer began with the publication of The Hunt for Red October in 1984. The novel was a critical and commercial success, praised for its detailed depiction of military technology and operations.
