Tom Clarke (born 10 January 1941) is a Scottish Labour Party politician. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill from 1982 to 2015.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Clarke was born in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire. He was educated at St Columba's High School and later attended the University of Strathclyde.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Clarke began his political career as a member of the Coatbridge Town Council and later served on the Monklands District Council. He was first elected to the House of Commons in a by-election in 1982, representing the constituency of Coatbridge and Chryston.

During his time in Parliament, Clarke held various positions, including serving as the Minister for Film and Tourism from 1997 to 1998. He was also a member of several parliamentary committees, including the International Development Committee and the Culture, Media and Sport Committee.

Contributions and legacy[edit | edit source]

Clarke was known for his work on disability rights and international development. He played a significant role in the passage of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and was a strong advocate for the rights of disabled people.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Clarke is married and has two children. He is a lifelong supporter of Celtic F.C. and has been involved in various charitable activities throughout his career.
