The Toronto Star is a Canadian broadsheet daily newspaper. It is the largest newspaper in Canada by circulation and is owned by Torstar Corporation. The newspaper was established in 1892 and has its headquarters at One Yonge Street in Toronto, Ontario.

History[edit | edit source]

The Toronto Star was founded in 1892 as the Evening Star by a group of striking printers and writers from the Toronto News. The paper was initially a four-page evening daily. In 1899, Joseph E. Atkinson became the editor and later acquired ownership, transforming the paper into a leading voice for social justice and progressive causes.

Under Atkinson's leadership, the Star became known for its advocacy of social welfare, public ownership of utilities, and other progressive policies. Atkinson's influence is still felt today, as the paper continues to uphold the Atkinson Principles, which include social justice, individual and civil liberties, community and civic engagement, and the rights of working people.

Editorial Stance[edit | edit source]

The Toronto Star is known for its liberal and progressive editorial stance. It has historically supported the Liberal Party of Canada and has been a strong advocate for social justice issues. The paper's editorial board often takes positions on issues such as healthcare, education, and environmental policy that align with progressive values.

Sections and Features[edit | edit source]

The Toronto Star covers a wide range of topics, including local, national, and international news, business, sports, entertainment, and lifestyle. The paper is known for its investigative journalism and has won numerous awards for its reporting.

Investigative Journalism[edit | edit source]

The Star has a strong tradition of investigative journalism. Notable investigations have included exposés on government corruption, corporate malfeasance, and social issues. The paper's investigative team has been recognized with several National Newspaper Awards.

Star Touch[edit | edit source]

In 2015, the Toronto Star launched Star Touch, a tablet app designed to provide an interactive news experience. However, due to financial challenges, the app was discontinued in 2017.

Ownership[edit | edit source]

The Toronto Star is owned by Torstar Corporation, a media company that also owns several other newspapers and digital properties. In 2020, Torstar was acquired by NordStar Capital, a private investment firm.

Digital Presence[edit | edit source]

The Toronto Star has a significant digital presence, with a website that offers news, opinion, and multimedia content. The paper has embraced digital journalism and offers a subscription-based model for online access.
