The aircraft involved was a Fairchild Metro III, a twin-engine turboprop commuter plane operated by Trans-Colorado Airlines.

The flight took off from Denver International Airport with 17 passengers and 3 crew members on board. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft experienced mechanical issues, leading to a loss of control. The pilots struggled to maintain stability, but ultimately, the plane crashed near Bayfield, Colorado, approximately 18 miles northeast of Durango-La Plata County Airport. Tragically, all 20 individuals on board Flight 2286 lost their lives in the crash. The incident prompted a thorough investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to determine the cause of the crash. The NTSB's final report cited mechanical failure as the primary factor contributing to the accident. The crash of Trans-Colorado Airlines Flight 2286 serves as a somber reminder of the importance of aviation safety and the need for rigorous maintenance procedures to prevent such tragedies from reoccurring.
