Traverse County is a county located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 3,308. Its county seat is Wheaton. The county was founded in 1862 and organized in 1881. It is named after Lake Traverse, which is located on the county's western border.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Traverse County is located in the western part of Minnesota. It is bordered by the counties of Big Stone, Stevens, Grant, and Wilkin. The county has a total area of 586 square miles, of which 574 square miles is land and 12 square miles is water.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2020 census, there were 3,308 people, 1,489 households, and 942 families residing in the county. The population density was 5.8 inhabitants per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 96.7% White, 0.3% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 1.1% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
