Treadwheel, also known as a treadmill crane or treadwheel crane, is a device that was widely used during the Middle Ages for various applications, most notably in construction and mining. It consists of a large wooden wheel that requires human or animal power to turn. The principle behind its operation is similar to that of a modern treadmill, with the major difference being its application in lifting heavy materials rather than for exercise.

The use of treadwheels dates back to the Greek and Roman times, but it became particularly prominent in the Middle Ages for the construction of cathedrals, castles, and other significant buildings. The treadwheel crane was a revolutionary invention at the time, as it significantly increased the lifting capability compared to previous methods, which mainly relied on manpower and simple machines like the pulley.

A typical treadwheel crane consists of a large wooden wheel, mounted vertically within a framework. The wheel is large enough to accommodate one or more workers walking inside it. As the workers walk, their weight and effort turn the wheel, which, through a system of gears and ropes, lifts heavy stones or other materials. This mechanism allowed for the lifting of considerably heavier weights than could be achieved by manual labor alone.

The efficiency of a treadwheel crane depended on several factors, including the diameter of the wheel, the number of people powering it, and the system of gears and pulleys used. The design varied depending on the specific requirements of the construction project, with some cranes being designed for heavy lifting while others were optimized for speed.

While the most notable use of treadwheels was in the construction of buildings, they were also employed in other areas. In mining, treadwheels were used to lift ore and water from mines. In some regions, treadwheels were used to pump water for irrigation or to drain water from flooded areas.

Decline and Legacy[edit | edit source]

The use of treadwheels began to decline with the advent of the Industrial Revolution, as new technologies such as steam engines and later electric motors offered more efficient and less labor-intensive methods of lifting heavy materials. However, the treadwheel remains an important part of the history of technology and engineering, illustrating the ingenuity of medieval engineers and the hard work of the laborers who operated them.
