The UEFA Europa League is an annual football club competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for eligible European football clubs. It is the second-tier competition of European club football, ranking below the UEFA Champions League.

History[edit | edit source]

The competition was first introduced in 1971 as the UEFA Cup. In 2009, it was rebranded as the UEFA Europa League following a merger with the UEFA Intertoto Cup. The rebranding aimed to enhance the competition's profile and increase its commercial appeal.

Format[edit | edit source]

The UEFA Europa League begins with a group stage, which consists of 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four. Each team plays the others in their group twice, once at home and once away. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout phase, where they are joined by the eight third-placed teams from the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Qualification[edit | edit source]

Clubs qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions. The number of teams that each association enters into the UEFA Europa League is based on the UEFA coefficients, which rank the performance of clubs from each association over a five-year period.

Winners[edit | edit source]

The most successful club in the history of the UEFA Europa League is Sevilla FC, with six titles. Other notable winners include Juventus FC, Inter Milan, and Liverpool FC.

Broadcasting[edit | edit source]

The UEFA Europa League is broadcast worldwide, with television rights sold to various networks. The competition has a significant following, with millions of viewers tuning in to watch the matches.
