Yuri Olefirenko is a Polnocny-class landing ship currently in service with the Ukrainian Navy. The ship was originally built for the Soviet Navy and was later transferred to Ukraine following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
History[edit | edit source]
The ship was constructed in the late 20th century as part of the Polnocny-class landing ship series, which were designed for amphibious operations. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the ship was transferred to the newly established Ukrainian Navy.
[edit | edit source]
Since its transfer, Yuri Olefirenko has been an active component of the Ukrainian naval forces. The ship has participated in various naval exercises and operations, contributing to the defense and security of Ukraine's maritime borders.
Design and Specifications[edit | edit source]
The Yuri Olefirenko, like other ships in the Polnocny-class landing ship series, is designed for amphibious warfare. It is equipped to transport troops, vehicles, and equipment directly onto shore without the need for port facilities.
Armament[edit | edit source]
The ship is armed with a variety of weapons systems to provide defensive and offensive capabilities during landing operations. These typically include naval guns, anti-aircraft systems, and other armaments suitable for amphibious assault.
Propulsion[edit | edit source]
The propulsion system of the Yuri Olefirenko allows it to achieve moderate speeds suitable for its role in amphibious operations. The ship's range and endurance enable it to operate effectively within the territorial waters of Ukraine and beyond.
Current Status[edit | edit source]
As of the latest reports, Yuri Olefirenko remains in active service with the Ukrainian Navy. The ship continues to play a vital role in the naval strategy of Ukraine, particularly in the context of regional security challenges.
