Unintended

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Unintended refers to something that was not planned or meant to happen. It can refer to an unintended pregnancy, unintended consequences, or unintended side effects of a drug or treatment.

Unintended Pregnancy[edit | edit source]

An unintended pregnancy is a pregnancy that is reported to have been either unwanted (that is, the pregnancy occurred when no children, or no more children, were desired) or mistimed (that is, the pregnancy occurred earlier than desired). Unintended pregnancies are the primary cause of induced abortion, resulting in about 42 million induced abortions worldwide each year.

Unintended Consequences[edit | edit source]

Unintended consequences are outcomes that are not the ones foreseen and intended by a purposeful action. The term was popularised in the twentieth century by American sociologist Robert K. Merton. Unintended consequences can be grouped into three types: Unexpected benefit, Unexpected drawback, Perverse result.

Unintended Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Unintended side effects are unexpected and undesired events or results linked to a medication or therapeutic intervention. These effects can range from mild to severe and can sometimes even be life-threatening.
